Clean is Cool!
What is it?
The cülie is the world’s first diaper pail and kitchen waste bin that uses a sub-zero environment to eliminate smells, pests, mold, and garbage juice.
Petal Incorporated was co-founded by two aerospace engineers Brian and Primoz, who left their rocket science careers to pursue their entrepreneurial passions.
The cülie creates a cleaner, happier, and healthier home. Spend less time cleaning your kitchen waste bins and eliminate expensive bag refills for diaper pails.
Everyone on the planet has to deal with organic kitchen waste not to mention new parents who also have to deal with dirty diapers. We believe the cülie can be used in every home and business on the planet.
The cülie will be available for an MSRP of $249. Buy on Indiegogo to get up to $80 off. Use the Indiegogo referral tools and successfully refer a friend to supercharge your discount.

We are crowdfunding to build a community of cülie owners while ensuring that early adopters are rewarded with the best price for their support.

The cost to bring a new appliance into production is difficult for a small company since the upfront tooling costs and component inventory is substantial. We want to be upfront that we need a minimum of 1000 cülie pre-orders to make the cülie a reality.

We’re using crowdfunding to gather like-minded individuals who see the importance of crowdfunding to start new businesses and see the vast potential of the cülie.

The cost to bring a new appliance into production is difficult for a small company since the upfront tooling costs and component inventory is To make organic kitchen waste and soiled diapers easier to handle and dispose of. We are passionate about making innovative products that create value and improve people’s lives.

Brian conceived of the cülie after storing his 7L kitchen bin in the freezer portion of his refrigerator and finding that while it eliminated all of the smells, juices, and pests, it was a nuisance to use.
The co-founders originally met at university where Primoz worked and Brian was a graduate student.
Our alpha prototype was hacked together from an old mini-fridge. We manually bent the stainless steel body and 3D printed the remaining exterior parts. We used a combination of rigid foam from the mini-fridge and some off-the-shelf spray foam for the insulation. Brian’s family and friends have been using the alpha prototype continuously since October 2015. We’ve had seven testers using the cülie for months at a time over the course of development.

The cülie takes advantage of the sublimation and deposition phenomena that occurs in sub-zero temperature environments. Moisture in the contents of the waste sublimates and turns into a vapor. An internal fan directs the moist air onto the cold evaporator where the moisture deposits and turns to ice. This process is called deposition. The automatic defrost periodically melts the ice where it drains into a drip pan and evaporates into the outside air.

Water vapor is an excellent vector for smells. So the cülie eliminates the smell vector by removing the water vapor. In addition, the sub-zero environment drastically slows down the growth of mold and bacteria so the waste does not decay.

Simply dispose of the waste as per your municipal or city guidelines…
Simply toss those soiled diapers out with the rest of your trash.
No! The freeze drying effect, effectively slows down the rate of decay and will keep the contents from decaying for longer outside of the unit itself.

No. The cülie was designed around the common grocery bag. For kitchen use, simply put in any plastic bag of your choice and you’re ready to go. Check with your municipality as some locations require you to use compostable bags.

For diapers, simply use any bag that fits in the cülie with or without the bin.

The cülie typically holds up to a week’s worth of food scraps.

The cülie holds up 40 newborn diapers with the bin, or up to 60 newborn diapers without a bin or about of a week of diapers.

Fast, easy, and clean. Simply pull the bag out of the cülie.

Many municipalities and cities across North America are moving to institute green bin programs where residents are required to sort their organic kitchen waste from their regular waste. This creates an issue with foul odors, pests, mold, and the dreaded garbage juice. Many people decide not to participate in these programs because of these nuisances.

The cülie helps with these programs by creating a better user experience for everyone.

The cülie’s attractive design fits comfortably in most homes and even in small spaces.

For the initial product launch, the cülie will come in one size that fits the needs of most homes. The cülie has a base footprint of 13.5 x 12.5 inches and a height of 25 inches.

The bin has a volume of 12 L or 3.2 Gallons.

The cülie is offered in either a stainless steel or white finish.
The cülie weighs approximately 30 lbs.
The cülie uses a combination of springs and dampers to smoothly open and close the lid. The springs assist in the opening of the lid, and the dampers keep the lid from slamming shut.
The cülie has rubber feet so that it won’t scratch your floor or slide when you push down on the pedal.
The cülie plugs into a standard North American 110-120 Volt outlet.
No! The cülie is very quiet and operates around 30-32 dB – the range of a whisper.

Based on real world tests that the cülie team has performed, the cülie uses around 23 KWh of power per month at the highest power setting. This translates to around $2.50 per month depending your jurisdiction. The costs will vary based on your jurisdiction, temperature settings, and other factors.

Production cülies are expected to have lower operating costs as manufacturing quality is improved over the prototypes.

The energy use was based on real-world performance testing using a certified power meter on the beta 3.0 cülies.
The cülie has three temperature settings ranging from -6 to -10 °C (or 21.2 to 14.0 °F).
The temperature settings were determined based on real world testing and compromising between energy usage, thermal insulation, and smell elimination. A typical deep freezer works at -17.8 °C or 0 °F for long term food storage; however, this level of chill is not necessary for what cülie was designed to achieve.
The cülie has an automatic defrost timer that will periodically activate to defrost the evaporator. The ice build-up on the evaporator will melt and drain into the drain pan where it will evaporate to the environment over time.
We’ve had some initial talks to have the cülie assembled by a contract manufacturer in the USA. The refrigeration components will be sourced from China.
The cülie is patents pending worldwide. We vigorously enforce intellectual property rights.
The cülie will be certified to all appropriate North American standards by a trusted third party lab – in particular UL 250 pertaining to household refrigerators and freezers or derivatives.
The cülie has a dampened lid that softens the force on closing. The gasket is also soft. We are also adding a guard for the push rods, but it was not ready for the video.
The cülie is compatible with flexible child safety locks.
The cülie is simple to setup. Simply plug it in, put a bag in the bin, and you’re ready to go.
The cülie was designed to be maintenance free. You may want to occasionally vacuum the front and rear airways for optimal performance.
The cülie bin is dishwasher safe. The inside of the cülie can be wiped down with common household cleansers using a soft cloth or paper towels. The metal body can be cleaned with a stainless steel cleaner or glass cleaner. The gasket in the lid is removable/replaceable.
No. The cülie was designed for indoor use only.
Production will begin around December of 2017.

The cülie has been in development for over two years. We have constructed eight prototypes (1 x alpha prototype, 1 x beta 1.0, 2 x beta 2.0 prototypes, and 4 x beta 3.0 prototypes). Brian and his family have been using the alpha prototype for 18 months. The Beta 3.0 cülies have been tested since January 2017. The cülie is now ready to go down the road to production.

The Petal team is ready to meet the challenges to bringing the cülie to market. We have aligned ourselves with mentors and partners who have proven track records of bringing products to market. Along with our own engineering and technical skills, we will be partnering with a proven refrigeration contract manufacturer to bring the cülie to you as fast as possible. We have already established relationships with two refrigeration component suppliers, a tooling and injection molding contractor, and a third party testing service.

We have allocated ten months to bring cülie from the end of the campaign to your front door. Understandably, ten months, seems like a long time, but due to the nature of the regulations and certifications required for household refrigeration devices, we want to be sure cülie is done right. We know that backers would be disappointed if the product they received was not up to par.

We pledge to prioritize all crowdfunding pre-orders before shipping to any national resellers. We also pledge to clearly and promptly communicate any issues that may arise.

Challenges may arise as we move into mass production. These could include a need to improve system parts or resolve issues related to fulfillment, such as transportation, international customs, etc.

Yes. The cülie will ship with a 12-month warranty.
